Samarkand Office of the UNWTO — "Tourism on the Silk Road" was established on the 22nd of October, 2004, according to the Agreement between the UNWTO and Government of Uzbekistan with the purpose of the creation of unified database of tourist attractions and monuments on the Silk Road, provision of close cooperation between 24 member states situated on the Silk Road, organization of seminars, conferences in order to unify common efforts in the development of the Great Silk Road project.
Main functions of the office:
1. To serve as connect joining branch between the Silk Road countries in order to develop tourism in this ancient road.
2. To promote initiatives directed to the support of the participation of the governments, encourage regional cooperation in this road.
3. To encourage the activities of tour-operators of the countries of region, directed to the organization of tourism in member-countries of the project.
4. To encourage joint participation of the Silk Road countries in tourist fairs, as well as the organization of joint stands of Silk Road in the international exhibitions.
